Joseph Tawadros AM is a 4-times ARIA award winning master of the Oud, a Middle Eastern lute. He has recorded 14 albums of original music and he is the oud player you hear on the ARIA award winning Ali’s Wedding soundtrack.
Expect a thrilling mix of Middle Eastern, jazz, traditional sounds and contemporary innovations, including music from Joseph’s new album The Bluebird, the Mystic and the Fool.
The quintet on the new album and in concert comprises Joseph – Oud, Matt McMahon – one of Australia’s finest jazz pianists and composers, James Tawadros – Joseph’s brother – a virtuoso player of Egyptian percussion (req, frame drum), Dimitri Vouros – clarinetist with skill in jazz, world and improvised music and Karl Dunnicliff – the respected jazz double bass player.
“They are phenomenal musicians, able to improvise and play off each other as they develop fusion music that crosses between classical, bluegrass, folk and jazz. Never less than electrifying and always entertaining, given Joseph’s wild sense of humour and ability to laugh at many taboos, this was a sensational concert…” – Performing Arts Hub, August 2017
“One of the most impressive musicians to emerge in Australia … with a dazzling technique dispensing hair-raising tempos… His writing displays a real depth of emotion …revelling in a zest for life and celebration.” – The Australian
Joseph, 34, was born in Cairo, grew up in Sydney and currently is based in London. He performs at concert halls, festivals and clubs all over the world in solo recitals, as a duo with James or in various line-ups, often with orchestras.
In 2017 he featured with BBC Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Morphing Chamber Orchestra and the Ukraine National Chamber Orchestra. In 2017 Joseph performed at the BBC Proms in Dubai, in Kiev, Poland, Vienna, London, Manchester, and several Australian concerts, including the premiere of his Concerto for Oud and Orchestra with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. In July 2018 Joseph will present a solo oud recital for the BBC Proms in London.
Joseph is also touring with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in mid 2018, while presenting his own concerts around the same period. The ACO will feature Joseph’s original pieces alongside Vivaldi in Darwin, Hobart and Tokyo.
“The playing throughout is technically astonishing and the interplay between the two brothers displays extraordinary empathy. Amid this fiery brilliance, reflective pieces … demonstrate Tawadros’s emerging maturity as a composer.” – Review of Live At Abbey Road, Jan 2018 Songlines Magazine U.K.
