Unlike other musicals ‘West Side Story’ grows younger!
A modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is an American musical with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and libretto by Stephen Sondheim, co-written by Leonard Bernstein.
The story is set on New York’s Upper West Side on the mid-1950s where racial and social tensions run high. In this setting, two young idealistic livers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
A poignant, provocative and emotionally powerful piece of theatre, its score features many of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s most famous compositions – Maria, American, Somewhere and Tonight.
